laid bare
installation art, video editing, and sound design
2024
Laid Bare explores the online space as a public space, and, by extension, a form of urban space. In public, we tend to keep to ourselves and often show very few signs of who we are below the surface. Especially as women, we are conditioned to hide intimate aspects of our identity and body from those around us for their comfort. However, the internet is a space in which everyone’s deepest forms emerge. Media archives reveal the depths of humanity and womanhood that would be tightly concealed in public spaces.
Combining these videos with the imagery of a bedroom, the most intimate space of a woman, reveals the parts of femininity that society prefers to brush under the rug. Objects that illustrate our personal lives as women are laid around the room, while a compilation of found footage and media projects over the space, portraying women at their most vulnerable, intimate, and personal moments. The whole experience is accompanied by the sounds of what happens behind the door of a woman’s personal space: private conversations, taking a shower, making the bed, moments of intimacy and so on.
Laid Bare is an installation piece that was created in collaboration with Alice Signorelli, Coco Anderson and Kate Swartz. It was exhibited in Galerie 45 in Paris from the 3rd to the 7th of April 2025.
