camera tracking, camera import in Maya
2024
As part of the project “Through your eyes”, two shots had to be camera tracked. We had a test shoot session where we were able to shoot footage to test camera angles and movements, as well as the camera tracking. Thanks to the test footage, I was able to create a shooting script for both shots.
Shot 1
After shooting the final shots, I worked on getting the Camera Track to work. I had to use a colour grade on the original shot to make the edges sharper and make the tracking more effective. After I managed to get a 3D scene in Nuke, I scaled it and oriented it properly and finally added my background matte painting displaying all the different levels of trees on different cards separated throughout space to create a parallax effect. I then animated two fog layers within the scene to add fog to the shot.
Shot 2
After shooting the final shots, I worked on getting the Camera Track to work. As I started working on the camera tracking of the second shot, I realized that it wasn’t going to work. The tracking failed halfway through. Even with the help of hand tracking, the
camera could not pick up the full movement. Because of this I had to only use half of this shot and use a different shot for the second part of that scene.

After tracking the shot, creating a scene, resizing and orienting it, I exported the camera generated in Nuke to Maya. I had to fix the position of the camera to match the movement in the 3D environment I had created, and I also had to make sure that the movement of the door was timed correctly with the shot. To do this I rendered the scene a few times and tested it out on Nuke.
