My video revolves around the concept of perspective. I decided to portray this person who came into my life and changed it completely, shifting my perspective on things. The person I am representing in in my portrait leads me to a place that seems scary at first but turns out to be welcoming and nostalgic. Even after this person leaves my life, a part of them, their way of seeing the world, is stuck with me, showing me the way to a new interpretation of life.

My project started with some research on the ideas of contrast and perspective, which I included both in the technical and conceptual aspects of my video. I also really cared about making the audience feel involved in the video: my portrait is strongly linked to the idea of relationship between who is being portrayed and the person meeting them who, in my case, is the viewer. I decided to try and achieve this with specific camera movements.

Storyboard

Located on opposite sides of the colour wheel, blue and orange are complementary colours which means that when placed one by the other they complement each other, creating high contrast and appearing brighter. Blue and orange are very different colours: taken by themselves they express very different, almost opposite feelings. Side by side however, they create a very interesting effect.

By itself blue feels very cold and dark, it evokes feelings such as melancholy and loneliness. Orange on the other hand is all about lightness, warmth, familiarity and innocence. However, when they are placed in the same shot, they create an unsettling tension between light and darkness, safety and danger, drawing the attention to the orange. This type of tension and contrast is ideal for the shots that compose my portrait.

To further enhance the contrasting elements of my video I knew that the outside of the house needed to be scary, unwelcoming, the audience had to feel uncertain about following the person towards the house, whereas the inside of the house needed to feel warm and welcoming.

The outside of the scene was assembled in Photoshop as a Mappe Painting and exported in Nuke to use as background in the camera tracking scene. The cottage was modelled, textured and shaded in Maya.
