“Untold Stories” is inspired by the stereotypical school classroom in specifically in public schools in Italy and South Africa, with wooden and metal tables and chairs in uniform. Public schools in both countries tend to have systems where dismissing teachers that either don’t teach or have abused children can be challenging. Each table has an object, each embodies a specific memory related to a student and a real-life experience. This project that showcases and highlights the stories of students during their school experience. Education is a period in our time in which we are our most impressionable, we are moulded and shaped into the people we will one day become. It is important to remember we are our memories and they affect how we behave, react, and interact with others. Often in the past education has used means of disciplining and reprimanding children in an outdated manner - often resulting in the student being psychologically, physically or even sexually abused. In one way, this project highlights the trauma many have faced during this stage in life but is also a testament to how education has improved and how it should continue to improve.
The final piece consists of the classroom maquette previously described and a projection of the handwriting of the seven different stories we decided to include in our project. We screen recorded the writing of the stories and adjusted the speed to make it readable for the viewers.
